Freedom West 50th Anniversary

Founded in 1973 in the wake of Urban Renewal, Freedom West was created to provide safe, affordable housing for low-income families of color returning to the Fillmore / Western Addition neighborhood. Using a co-op ownership model to enable housing stability, as well as educational and career support, for underserved populations to build multi-generational wealth in a high-cost high-opportunity city.

Now 50 years since its founding, Freedom West celebrates the residents, community, government, and development partners who are working together to revitalize Freedom West and set it on a firm pathway to economic self-sustainability for the next 100 years!

Freedom West 2.0 Shareholder Update & Feedback Event

April 6 was a day to celebrate at Freedom West as our Board of Directors, led by president Mattie Scott and vice president Richard O’Neal, joined the Freedom West 2.0 development team leadership. With the team presenting new renderings of the revitalization plan, the highlight of the meeting was the announcement of the new, 100% affordable senior building, designed specifically to meet the needs of the seniors at Freedom West on a fixed income. The development reaffirmed to the standing room only group of residents who convened that it is on track with fulfilling the Freedom West 2.0 Guiding Principles created by the resident board and voted on by the full community representing approximately 1,000 existing residents.

Freedom West 2.0 Inaugural Stakeholder Convening Meeting

This interactive partners convening and reception included celebrating the history of Freedom West through the personal stories of residents as well as through the lens of Urban Renewal and its detrimental impact on the decrease of the African American population in San Francisco. The partners worked to inform and refine the $2 Billion+ Design, Build & Empower With Equity plan to catalyze the revitalization of the Fillmore District and Western Addition while creating economic parity for marginalized residents of color in San Francisco (past, present, and future), announcing current and new partnerships, celebrating new connections and big ideas, and enjoying an advance preview of “Reimagining Freedom West,” a mini documentary film narrated by award-winning actor, director, activist, and San Francisco native, Danny Glover.

Freedom West Family Day

Freedom West Family Day is a day of bridging age differences, cultural similarities, life experiences with a focus on building a healthy community. September 25 will be remembered for live music, food and a multitude of smiles and joyful conversations. With special attendees like The Honorable San Francisco Mayor Lon don Breed,  Pastor Shaw of Bethel AME, District 5 Supervisor Dean Preston, and all of the top their talented members of the Freedom West family. It included a host of agencies, advocacy groups, and outreach services on hand with information and guidance to beneficial recourses, as well as beautiful music from saxophonist The Real KMS and latest hits played by Freedom West owns DJ Blac Marc.
